The avocado is quite a unique fruit.  Instead of being carbohydrate dense, it is  is full of healthy fats.  And no, it won’t make you fat. The avocado, or alligator pear, is a large single seeded berry. Avocados are grown in tropical areas throughout the world. They have a green skin and the shape of a pear or an egg.  Avocados are the main ingredient in guacamole!

 

1. Avocados are full of Vitamins and Minerals

Avocados contain over 20 vitamins and minerals!  They have the most of vitamins A, K, E, and D.  The fats in the avocado also help to absorb them right into your system since they are fat soluble vitamins.  A good amount of vitamin C and potassium can also be found in avocados – more than what you would even find in a banana!

 

2. They’re loaded with heart-healthy fats

Over 70% of the calories in an avocado are from fats, and that’s not a bad thing either.  Mainly being composed of oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid, the avocado can help reduce inflammation and links to cancer with its healthy fats.

 

3. It can lower your cholesterol

Avocados are high in beta-sitosterol which can lead to a healthy heart.  This chemical can lower your LDL (bad cholesterol) levels and raise your HDL (good cholesterol) levels, thus bettering your cholesterol and overall health.  It can also reduce blood triglycerides.

 

4. It has many antioxidants

Avocados contain some great antioxidants such as Lutein and Zeaxanthin which are critical to eye health.  With these antioxidants, the avocado can help to reduce cataracts and macular degeneration.

 

5. It may reduce arthritis symptoms

Avocados are also great because they can help to reduce arthritis!  They contain phytosterols, omega 3, and fatty alcohols which are all great for reducing inflammation.

 

All in all, avocados are a great fruit.  They are full of health benefits and taste good too!  They are easily added to almost any meal as well.  You can eat them raw, with a small bit of salt, throw them on a hamburger, or make guacamole with chips.  It’s all up to you!
